On May 5, 2011, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published a proposed rule that would eliminate federal protection for wolves in the northeast because the Service now says that the gray wolf is not native to all or parts of 29 states including all of the northeast U.S.  In its proposed rule, the USFWS provided no evidence to support its claim that gray wolves are not native to the northeast.  Instead, the USFWS is now recognizing the eastern wolf (Canis lycaon) as the wolf that is native to the northeast.  If enacted, the rule would eliminate federal protection for wolves throughout the central and eastern U.S. Read the rest of this entry »

MDIFW Violates Maine’s Freedom of Access Law

1 M.R.S.A. § 408 is Maine’s Freedom of Access law.  It gives every person, “…the right to inspect and copy any public record…within a reasonable period of time after making a request to inspect or copy the public record.” 1 M.R.S.A. § 409(1) states in part, “If any body or agency or official who has custody or control of any public record refuses permission to inspect…a public record, this denial must be made…in writing, stating the reason for the denial, within 5 working days of the request for inspection by any person.  Any person aggrieved by denial may appeal, within 5 working days of the receipt of the written notice of denial, to any Superior Court within the State.” Read the rest of this entry »
