April 2005 – Sterling, New York

A 99 pound canid was killed after it attacked a family dog.  A DNA analysis at the National Fish and Wildlife Forensic Laboratory gave it a “Population Assignment using Doh placed (it) with gray wolves originating from Wisconsin and other wolves from the Great Lakes region of the United States.”  The report concluded that the animal had likely been bred in captivity.  We now know that wolves can disperse great distances and that a “Great Lakes Gray wolf” was killed in New York in 2021.  Further analysis of the animal needs to be conducted.  No photo is available.
